A review of "Enchanted" at Klezmer Shack
"From co-founding KlezKamp to teaching generations of singers how to sing Yiddish, to hundreds of performances in which she demonstrates how to sing Yiddish—how to SING!, Adrienne Cooper has been a driving force in making Yiddish song something that one notices and that one longs to hear more of. Her repertoire over the years has ranged from art song to theatrical, and of course, traditional Yiddish song." Read the complete article.

Boda, Sephardic Wedding Songs - Saltiel Ensemble
Turkish-Austrian native Ladino speaker and singer Aron Saltiel and Ensemble Saltiel will present a program of recently collected and recorded rare Sephardic wedding music, as part of the 26th Jewish Music Festival in Berkeley, California, March 9th, 2011. The group is available for other U.S. performances in March.
This is a unique opportunity to experience the repertoire of a traditional Turkish Sephardic wedding – songs and music from the engagement, the preparation of the dowry and the trading of gifts, to the drawing up of the marriage contract, the ceremony and the subsequent week. The songs themselves were historically sung within the Istanbul-based Saltiel family. As a veteran researcher of this repertoire who grew up in the community, Aron is both an authority on the music and a great performer.
Accompanied by hugely famous Turkish and Roma virtuosos at the forefront of modern Turkish pop and folk music, Ensemble Saltiel recalls the historic collaboration of a capella singing combined with instruments such as oud, kanun (harp), zurna (Turkish oboe) kemenche (bowed lyre), clarinet, violin, darabuka (drum) and tambourine. The music is lush, nuanced and intricately interwoven with mesmerizing taksim (explorative instrumental improvisations).

Veretski Pass - New Season
Veretski Pass ~ Music from the Carpathian Bow
Cookie Segelstein - Violin, Viola
Joshua Horowitz – Cimbalom, Chromatic Button Accordion, Piano
Stuart Brotman - Bass, Basy, Tilinca, Baraban
“…Veretski Pass, one hot band!” Chicago Sun Times
“…Veretski Pass stands out as something bold, unusual and musically satisfying.” ~ Simon Broughton, BBC and Songlines Magazine
"… No one else on the local scene - or any other scene - is doing what Veretski Pass is. The tunes are mysterious, enthralling and beautiful." Eric R. Danton, Hartford Courant
Taking its name from the mountain pass through which Magyar tribes crossed into the Carpathian basin to settle what later became the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Veretski Pass offers a unique and exciting combination of virtuosic musicianship and raw energy that has excited concertgoers across the world. The trio plays Old Country Music with origins in the Ottoman Empire, once fabled as the borderlands of the East and the West. In a true collage of Carpathian, Jewish, Rumanian and Ottoman styles, typical suites contain dances from Moldavia and Bessarabia; Jewish melodies from Poland and Rumania; Hutzul wedding music from Carpathian-Ruthenia; and haunting Rebetic aires from Smyrna, seamlessly integrated with original compositions. Veretski Pass recently performed at the Concertgebouw Concert Hall in Amsterdam, and their CDs have repeatedly been on the 10-best recording lists of journalists.

A review of "The Klezmer Shul Live" at Klezmer Shack
"This is modern shul music, and like the davening of the best of the old-time cantors, this is also music to open the heart to repentence and new beginnings; to hope, an awareness of the greater cosmos around us, and to the power of prayer and community." Read the complete article.

Veretski Pass' New Release:
Trafik
After
the smash reception of their eponymous first CD, the eccentric trio Veretski
Pass is now releasing a second CD, Trafik.
A true collage of Carpathian, Jewish, Rumanian and Ottoman styles, the
suites contain dances from Moldavia and Bessarabia; Jewish melodies from
Poland and Rumania, Hutzul wedding music from Carpathian-Ruthenia, and
haunting Rembetic aires from Smyrna, seamlessly integrated with a large
number of original compositions.
Deepak Ram's New Release: Steps
Deepak Ram may be the only South African-born Indian musician to compose
a tune in honor of the dance that Nelson Mandela does on stage. He may
be the first person to ever master the jazz standard “Giant Steps”
on bansuri (Indian bamboo flute). But none of this is surprising given
where he came from. His latest album, Steps
featuring both of these tunes, is a logical response to his life experience,
with one foot in ragas and one foot in African and African-American jazz.
Reviews...
Deepak Ram's Latest Classical Release: One Breath
Few
living players of the bansuri coax such melodic joy from their instrument
as the gifted Deepak Ram. On One
Breath, Deepak and accompanying tabla maestro
Pandit Anindo Chatterjee perform three, brilliantly conceived ragas in
North Indian Classical (Hindustani) style. With unified precision and
balance the two delve deeply into highly formidable, richly liberating
musical structures cultivated over centuries by successive master musicians
- of whose legacy Ram and Chatterjee both share.
Budowitz Live - Top of the
World
Our
latest release, “Budowitz
Live ”, a double-CD recording by Budowitz has
been awarded Songlines Magazines’ 'Top of the World' in their July/
August 2007 issue. Tracks from the album are also included in magazines
compilation album that is distributed with the magazine. A review of the
release, written by Simon Broughton, appears in the magazine as well.
Here are his first and last sentences from the review: “Budowitz
are surely the best band playing old-time Jewish instrumental music from
Eastern Europe around right now….Throughout the disc the music is
raw and gutsy – played with great artistry and a sense of fun.”
