Adrienne Cooper is internationally recognized as one of this generation’s
stellar performers and teachers of Yiddish vocal music. From Carnegie
Hall to the famed Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, from Moscow to Jerusalem,
she has mesmerized audiences and worked at the heart of the klezmer revival
scene, defining a wholly original interpretation of Yiddish song. On her
latest CD, Cooper has teamed up with longtime accompanist Marilyn Lerner
and a cast of New York’s finest next generation Jewish musicians, led
by clarinetist Michael Winograd. The result: a daring and inventive combination
of deep Yiddish soul with fearless innovation rooted in klezmer, jazz,
pop and world music. Featuring Adrienne Cooper (vocals), Marilyn Lerner
(piano), Mike Winograd (clarinet), Benjy Fox-Rosen (bass), Avi Fox-Rosen
(guitar), Chris Berry (drums), and additional guests. Information

Pass :: The Klezmer Shul - Thursday, July 15, 2010 @ 8:00p, at National
Yiddish Book Center
Inspired by the synagogues
of pre-war Eastern Europe, The Klezmer Shul is rooted in Jewish liturgical
melodic principles and emotionals intonations. This four-movement instrumental
suite transmits the emotional power of synagogue singing without the use
of words, incorporating elements of jazz, avant-garde, classical, klezmer,
and folk music. Stu Brotman, string bass, basy, baraban; Cookie Segelstein,
violin; and Joshua Horowitz, 19th-century Budowitz button accordion, piano.

Charity Concert for Rural
Indian Hospital with Deepak Ram and Steps Jazz Quartet
Saturday, June 26, 2010, 6:30pm
- 10:00pm,
Anubhuti Retreat Center, Novato, CA
We
invite you to a very special benefit concert of Deepak Ram, senior disciple
of world renowned bansuri maestro, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Deepak
is an incredibly versatile artist who is well known for his evocative
performances in traditional North Indian classical music, his collaborations
with musicians of other genres and his innovative compositions. Accompanying
him on tabla is Satish Tare for the first part of the evening and also
joining him will be Steps a jazz quartet (deepakram.com).
The proceeds for this concert will go to a rural hospital in Mt. Abu,
Rajasthan, India. Dr. Partap Midha, Director of the J. Watumull Gobal
Hospital & Research Centre, will be with us to present medical and holistic
services rendered by the hospital to the underprivileged villages nearby
(www.ghrc-abu.com). Global Hospital is a centre for holistic healthcare.
With about 3,000 surgeries and 85,000 out-patient treatments in 2009,
it combines the best that modern medicine has to offer with complementary
medicine systems like Ayurveda, homeopathy, magnet therapy and so on.
Besides offering medical services through out-patient clinics and hospitalization,
the hospital has expanded its operations to focus on community outreach
programs, medical research, vocational education in paramedical streams
and the promotion of health awareness.

Veretski Pass' New Release:
Trafik
After
the smash reception of their eponymous first CD, the eccentric trio Veretski
Pass is now releasing a second CD, Trafik.
A true collage of Carpathian, Jewish, Rumanian and Ottoman styles, the
suites contain dances from Moldavia and Bessarabia; Jewish melodies from
Poland and Rumania, Hutzul wedding music from Carpathian-Ruthenia, and
haunting Rembetic aires from Smyrna, seamlessly integrated with a large
number of original compositions.
Deepak Ram's New Release:
Steps
Deepak Ram may be the only South African-born Indian musician to compose
a tune in honor of the dance that Nelson Mandela does on stage. He may
be the first person to ever master the jazz standard “Giant Steps”
on bansuri (Indian bamboo flute). But none of this is surprising given
where he came from. His latest album, Steps
featuring both of these tunes, is a logical response to his life experience,
with one foot in ragas and one foot in African and African-American jazz.
Reviews...
Deepak Ram's Latest Classical
Release: One Breath
Few
living players of the bansuri coax such melodic joy from their instrument
as the gifted Deepak Ram. On One
Breath, Deepak and accompanying tabla maestro
Pandit Anindo Chatterjee perform three, brilliantly conceived ragas in
North Indian Classical (Hindustani) style. With unified precision and
balance the two delve deeply into highly formidable, richly liberating
musical structures cultivated over centuries by successive master musicians
- of whose legacy Ram and Chatterjee both share.
Budowitz Live - Top of the
World
Our
latest release, “Budowitz
Live ”, a double-CD recording by Budowitz has
been awarded Songlines Magazines’ 'Top of the World' in their July/
August 2007 issue. Tracks from the album are also included in magazines
compilation album that is distributed with the magazine. A review of the
release, written by Simon Broughton, appears in the magazine as well.
Here are his first and last sentences from the review: “Budowitz
are surely the best band playing old-time Jewish instrumental music from
Eastern Europe around right now….Throughout the disc the music is
raw and gutsy – played with great artistry and a sense of fun.”
