Boda, Sephardic Wedding Songs - Saltiel Ensemble

Turkish-Austrian native Ladino speaker and singer Aron Saltiel and Ensemble Saltiel will present a program of recently collected and recorded rare Sephardic wedding music, as part of the 26th Jewish Music Festival in Berkeley, California, March 9th, 2011. The group is available for other U.S. performances in March. This is a unique opportunity to experience the repertoire of a traditional Turkish Sephardic wedding – songs and music from the engagement, the preparation of the dowry and the trading of gifts, to the drawing up of the marriage contract, the ceremony and the subsequent week. The songs themselves were historically sung within the Istanbul-based Saltiel family. As a veteran researcher of this repertoire who grew up in the community, Aron is both an authority on the music and a great performer. Accompanied by hugely famous Turkish and Roma virtuosos at the forefront of modern Turkish pop and folk music, Ensemble Saltiel recalls the historic collaboration of a capella singing combined with instruments such as oud, kanun (harp), zurna (Turkish oboe) kemenche (bowed lyre), clarinet, violin, darabuka (drum) and tambourine. The music is lush, nuanced and intricately interwoven with mesmerizing taksim (explorative instrumental improvisations).

Taking its name from the mountain pass through which Magyar tribes crossed into the Carpathian basin to settle what later became the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Veretski Pass offers a unique and exciting combination of virtuosic musicianship and raw energy that has excited concertgoers across the world. The trio plays Old Country Music with origins in the Ottoman Empire, once fabled as the borderlands of the East and the West. Özgen Trio Concerts

Özgen Trio, led by guitarist Mesut Özgen, recently gave two concerts in Northern California. Titled “Anatolian Fantasy with the Özgen Trio”, concerts featured Mesut Özgen on guitar, Neva Özgen on kemençe and Kathleen Purcell on flute. The trio presented works by Prince Dimitrie Cantemir (1673-1723) (“Prince Dimitrie Cantemir Collection”), Turkish Composer Yalcin Tura (“Hüseyni Saz Semaisi”) and Santa Cruz based composer David Evan Jones (“News From Afar”). Several works by Mesut Özgen were also featured in the concert (“Anatolian Fantasy”, “Rumeli Türküsü”, “Vira Sevda” and arrangement of three Turkish Folk Songs.) The UCSC Music Department's "Friday Night Live" series kicks off the 2010-2011 season with a concert featuring faculty guitarist Mesut Özgen leading the Özgen Trio, with Turkish kemençe master Neva Özgen and flutist Kathleen Purcell, presenting a repertoire from the classical and folk musics of Turkey on Friday, October 22, 2010, 7:30 pm at UCSC Music Center Recital Hall. The program includes works by Prince Dimitrie Cantemir, Yalçin Tura, Mesut Özgen, and David Evan Jones, whose new piece for kemençe, guitar, and computer-generated tape will receive its premiere at this concert. Neva Özgen, a master of kemençe (Turkish bowed instrument with gut strings) and one of the most respected improvisers in Turkish classical music, currently teaches at the Istanbul University Turkish Music Conservatory.

We invite you to a very special benefit concert of Deepak Ram, senior disciple of world renowned bansuri maestro, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Deepak is an incredibly versatile artist who is well known for his evocative performances in traditional North Indian classical music, his collaborations with musicians of other genres and his innovative compositions. Accompanying him on tabla is Satish Tare for the first part of the evening and also joining him will be Steps a jazz quartet (deepakram.com).

The proceeds for this concert will go to a rural hospital in Mt. Abu, Rajasthan, India. Dr. Partap Midha, Director of the J. Watumull Gobal Hospital & Research Centre, will be with us to present medical and holistic services rendered by the hospital to the underprivileged villages nearby (www.ghrc-abu.com). Global Hospital is a centre for holistic healthcare. With about 3,000 surgeries and 85,000 out-patient treatments in 2009, it combines the best that modern medicine has to offer with complementary medicine systems like Ayurveda, homeopathy, magnet therapy and so on. Deepak Ram's New Release: Steps

Deepak Ram may be the only South African-born Indian musician to compose a tune in honor of the dance that Nelson Mandela does on stage. He may be the first person to ever master the jazz standard “Giant Steps” on bansuri (Indian bamboo flute). But none of this is surprising given where he came from.
